The term is used by meditation and Buddhist teachers to describe a restless, unsettled mental state. It is often characterized by thoughts that are erratic, impulsive, and unhelpful.

Exploring Life’s Mysteries: What Causes Bad Luck in Life

You can do this meditation anywhere, anytime, and under any circumstances. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Notice the sensation in your face, head, and neck. Then, move your attention to the top part of your body: shoulders, back, chest, and abdomen. Then, the middle part: arms, hands, and fingers. Next, the lower part of your body: buttocks, legs, and feet. Notice the sensations and keep your focus on them.

Practicing mindfulness on a daily basis will help you learn to befriend your monkey mind. This will not stop it from jumping from branch to branch, but will teach you to re-center yourself and acknowledge that those pessimistic or self-destructive thoughts are just that—thoughts. It will also help you recognize that they are unhelpful and can be a source of frustration and suffering. As a result, you will be able to choose more helpful thoughts to focus on instead of chasing after those that are erratic and irrational.
